UNIT #2 Still Life in Natural Light Series
Ideation: Illumination in Suspension
Proposal:
For this assignment, I have decided to photograph my own home preserves in various forms, from dried fruit to sauces, vegetables, and fruits in jars.
Throughout the year I garden. In the winter and spring, I turn the soil in my garden and feed it compost and other organic rot to build the nutrients in the soil. I refer to my garden journal to see what worked and what did not, what fruits and vegetables grew, where how, and how well. I check my seed storage and plan my planting rotation.
In the early spring, I start sewing of the vegetables that prefer the cooler seasons and the longer germination vegetables that will sprout and grow in the summer. From this time I continue to work in the gardens both vegetable and flower, weeding, promoting growth, watering feeding.
During the summer I venture out into the forests to pick berries, mushrooms spruce tips, and the occasional fiddlehead to supplement those that I grow at home. I also stop at the occasional roadside bush to pick the berries growing from the ditch. Though I am careful as to how busy the road is as I would call most roadside berries lead pellets.
Late summer and fall I harvest and preserve what I have gathered. From sauces, canned fruits, and pickled vegetables to dried fruits, jams jellies, spreads, and relishes. Oh, yum I do love my beet relish. While these preserves cool on the counter in the late Autumn afternoon the sun shines on them. The fruits suspended in syrup behind the glass seem to glow like precious gems. The jams and jellies jewels in their jars take on a translucent luminosity and the sun passes through the thick concoctions. I have always thought about how pretty and have drawn a few black-and-white pictures of scenes.
Think of how lovely these preserves look with the sun shining through them I have decided to use this theme of food for the Unit 2 assignment.
